Romans 5:1-21 PEACE & GRACE THROUGH CHRIST
2
DEPRAVED SINNERS Romans 1:28 And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a debased mind, to do those things which are not fitting; 29 being filled with all unrighteousness, sexual immorality, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, evil- mindedness; they are whisperers,
3
RELIGIOUS SINNERS Romans 2:17 Indeed you are called a Jew, and rest on the law, and make your boast in God, 18 and know His will, and approve the things that are excellent, being instructed out of the law,… 23 You who make your boast in the law, do you dishonor God through breaking the law? 24 For “the name of God is blasphemed among the Gentiles because of you,”as it is written.
4
NOT ONE RIGHTEOUS Romans 3:10 As it is written: “There is none righteous, no, not one; 11 There is none who understands; There is none who seeks after God. 12 They have all turned aside; They have together become unprofitable; There is none who does good, no, not one.”
5
SINNERS ALL! Romans 3:23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,
6
JUSTIFIED BY FAITH Romans 3:28 Therefore we conclude that a man is justified by faith apart from the deeds of the law. 29 Or is He the God of the Jews only? Is He not also the God of the Gentiles? Yes, of the Gentiles also, 30 since there is one God who will justify the circumcised by faith and the uncircumcised through faith.
7
ABRAHAM’S FAITH EXAMPLE Romans 4:20 He did not waver at the promise of God through unbelief, but was strengthened in faith, giving glory to God, 21 and being fully convinced that what He had promised He was also able to perform. 22 And therefore “it was accounted to him for righteousness.”
8
OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS BY FAITH Romans 4:23 Now it was not written for his sake alone that it was imputed to him, 24 but also for us. It shall be imputed to us who believe in Him who raised up Jesus our Lord from the dead, 25 who was delivered up because of our offenses, and was raised because of our justification.
9
OFFENSES JUSTIFIED Offenses – Paraptoma a side slip: lapse or deviation: (unintentional) error or (willful) transgression: fall, fault, offense, sin, trespass. Justification – dikaiosis from acquittal (for Christ’s sake)
10
PEACE & GRACE Romans 5:1 Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace (quietness, rest)with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, 2 through whom also we have access by faith into this grace (divine influence on the heart and its reflection in life) in which we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God.
11
TRIBULATIONS & HOPE 3 And not only that, but we also glory in tribulations, knowing that tribulation produces perseverance; 4 and perseverance, character; and character, hope. 5 Now hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out in our hearts by the Holy Spirit who was given to us.
12
TRIALS & MATURITY James 1:2 My brethren, count it all joy when you fall into various trials, 3 knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience. 4 But let patience have its perfect work, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking nothing.
13
GOD’S LOVE DEMONSTRATED Romans 5:6 For when we were still without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly. 7 For scarcely for a righteous man will one die; yet perhaps for a good man someone would even dare to die. 8 But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
14
GOD’S LOVE & MERCY “We like to believe God saved us because we are fairly redeemable. But our great and merciful God saved avowed enemies, not promising prospects.” – Walter C. Kaiser, Jr., Tough Questions about God and His Acts.
15
JUSTIFIED, RECONCILED & SAVED Romans5:9 Much more then, having now been justified by His blood, we shall be saved from wrath through Him. 10 For if when we were enemies we were reconciled to God through the death of His Son, much more, having been reconciled, we shall be saved by His life. 11 And not only that, but we also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received the reconciliation.
16
SIN & DEATH THROUGH ADAM Romans 5:12 Therefore, just as through one man sin entered the world, and death through sin, and thus death spread to all men, because all sinned— 13 (For until the law sin was in the world, but sin is not imputed when there is no law. 14 Nevertheless death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over those who had not sinned according to the likeness of the transgression of Adam, who is a type of Him who was to come.
17
JUSTIFICATION VS CONDEMENATION Romans 5:15 But the free gift is not like the offense. For if by the one man’s offense many died, much more the grace of God and the gift by the grace of the one Man, Jesus Christ, abounded to many. 16 And the gift is not like that which came through the one who sinned. For the judgment which came from one offense resulted in condemnation, but the free gift which came from many offenses resulted in justification.
18
ABUNDANCE OF GRACE 17 For if by the one man’s offense death reigned through the one, much more those who receive abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness will reign in life through the One, Jesus Christ.)
19
MANY MADE RIGHTEOUS Romans 5:18 Therefore, as through one man’s offense judgment came to all men, resulting in condemnation, even so through one Man’s righteous act the free gift came to all men, resulting in justification of life. 19 For as by one man’s disobedience many were made sinners, so also by one Man’s obedience many will be made righteous.
20
GRACE REIGNS VIA RIGHTEOUSNESS Romans 5:20 Moreover the law entered that the offense might abound. But where sin abounded, grace abounded much more, 21 so that as sin reigned in death, even so grace might reign through righteousness to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
