2 Key Vocabulary Infant– a child who is less than 2 years old and can’t walk or talk. Toddler– a child who is about 2 years old and is learning to walk. Preschooler– a child who is 3-5 years old. DAP– developmentally appropriate practice. Family– people you are related to/live with. Child Abuse– hurting a child (physical, verbal, emotional, or neglect).

Child care workers held about 1.4 million jobs in 2006. 18% of child care workers work in daycare. 20% work for private households. About 35% are self-employed. Child development jobs are in high demand and are expected to increase 9-17% by 2014. Child development jobs require high skills and are nontraditional for males. Nationwide, families pay an average of 14% of their annual income on child care.

Get the Facts: Family Family and Community Service employees hold about 2.2 million jobs. Social Service jobs are one of the fastest growing occupations, especially those that work with the elderly. Family & Human Service jobs are in high demand. Family & Human Service jobs are nontraditional for males. Studies have show that a harmonious marriage relationship promotes competence and maturity in the couple’s children. Other studies have demonstrated that marital conflict may result in cognitive delay, school difficulties, and antisocial or withdrawn behavior.

9 Health Care Get the Facts:
Health care is the largest and fastest growing industry in the United States. Health care employs more than 10 million workers in more than 200 careers. Registered nursed are the largest health care occupation. Physical Therapy is one of the top 10 fields. EMTs are growing at 39% in Utah every year. The dental industry is in critical need of dental assistants. Medical assistants is one of the fastest growing occupations. 1. Registered nurses held about 2.4 million jobs in About 3 out of 5 RN jobs are in hospitals, in inpatient and outpatient departments. 2. There are approximately 750,000 EMT’s across the nation. A growing and urbanized population will demand more emergency services increasing the need for professional emergency medical technicians (EMTs) and paramedics. Employment for dental assistants is expected to increase 27% through the year 2014. Medical assistants held about 387,000 jobs in A growing and aging population and technological advances in medicine make medical assistants one of the fastest growing occupations through the year About 62% of all medical assistants work in a physician’s office. Job openings for optical technicians are expected to be limited because the occupation is small. With the increased needs of an aging population, many job opportunities for pharmacy techs will be created, especially for those with formal training and certification. New opportunities are emerging for pharmacists in managed care organizations, where they analyze trends and patterns in medication use, and in pharmocoeconomics (the cost and benefit analysis of different drug therapies. Demand for surgical technicians will rise as the population ages and as new technologies allow for more and varied surgeries. Hospitals will remain the primary employer, but physician offices and clinics, including ambulatory surgical centers, will provide most new jobs.
