The worship of Kifissos as a god and the presence of his sculpture in the west pendiment of Parthenonas is evidence of his great importance for the land of athens.
3
The posture, its vigor and its plasticity may refer to a river flow
4
His waters made the grounds of the west side fertile. Archeological findings testify the existence of irrigation pipelines which were used to transfer water from Kifissos through Makra Teixh (Great Walls). The Adrianio water reservoir was built near Kifissos the 2 nd century A.D in order to cover the irrigation needs utilizing the water potential of the river and transfering it in the Tank ( in the area of Kolonaki).

River basin : 361 Km 2 Length of river : 22 Km ( 14 Km in the city area and 8 Km out of the city ) Depth of river mouth in Saronikos bay : 9,5 m Basic information

KIFISSOS TRAIL The river springs from the mountains Parnitha and Penteli and is poured into Saronic Gulf. Parnitha Penteli
10
The north part of the river ( from the springs to the area called “Three Bridges” ) is open with rich flora. The airstrems produced by water flow, trees and plants activate as a natural air conditioner for the areas near the river. Three Bridges
11
In the southern part, the river flows for 14 km under the highway named Kifissou Avenue. Three Bridges Kifissos river under the highwayBROOK OF KIFISSOS NEAR RENTI 1 2 12

MAJOR PROBLEMS Over the past decades Kifissos became a flowing garbage dump and repository for toxic industrial waste as well as illegal construction. From a “water artery” it became a heavy “traffic artery” as for its final 15 kms it is channelled under a highway. Today, the river is inaccessible to the public for most of its length, and no longer seems to belong to the town.
13
flora and fauna At the North part near Kifisos river live many kinds of trees like plane trees ( platanos), wickers (ligaria), salics (itia) and herbals like nasturtium ( nerokardamo ) with pharmaceutical attributes.
14
They have been observed more than 90 species of birds, small mammals as hedgehogs, mice and foxes, aquatic animals as turtles, frogs and water snakes. Kifisos river is still alive !!!
