8 Correggio is a small town and comune in the Province of Reggio Emilia, in the Emilia-Romagna region of Italy, in the Po valley. Correggio had an estimated population of 23,108. Its patron saint is Quirinus of Neuss, to whom the church of San Quirino is dedicated. It was the seat of Veronica Gambara (1485–1550) a noted politician poet who ruled the principality after the death of her husband Giberto X, Count of Correggio, from 1518 to 1550. It is the birthplace of the Renaissance painter Antonio Allegri, who was called "il Correggio" from the name of his town. The French poet Tugdual Menon resided in Correggio for much of his life. 10 The Province of Reggio Emilia (Italian: Provincia di Reggio Emilia) is one of the nine provinces of the Italian Region of Emilia-Romagna. It has an area of 2,293 km² and a population of 530,343. There are 44 comuni (singular: comune) in the province. Luzzara is the second largest commune in Emilia-Romagna and has the highest number of foreign nationals in the region. The Province is home to the historical Canossa Castle, property of the countess Matilde; it is where the famous Walk to Canossa of Henry IV occurred. Representatives of the free municipalities of Reggio, Modena, Bologna and Ferrara met in Reggio Emilia's Sala del Tricolore in 1797 to proclaim the Repubblica Cispadana, adopting the three colour green-white-red flag to represent their newly formed Republic; it was later adopted in 1848 as the national flag.
