7 UNIT 1 BIG IDEAS 1.In the 1400s and 1500s, European interest in global exploration took place. 2.During the 1600s and 1700s, economic and technological forces resulted in European nations expanding their power to other parts of the world.

8 Sailors learned to use these to travel across the ocans. Europeans wanted to find an all water route to Asia to avoid having to pay the Ottomans & Italian merchants high prices. Established a naval research center and mapped out the coast of Africa. Gave Spain a foothold for building an empire in the Americas. Divided new land between Portugal & Spain. Land to the west Spain could claim. Land to the east would go to Portugal. Gave the world a description of a larger world than they ever knew about. EQ 2
