2 Remember Colonization has taken a heavy toll on FNs:  Sad Stats -education, income, life expectancy, suicides, housing, employability, addictions etc. etc. -Healing Foundation -Friendship Centres designed to help designed to help

3 Changes in Education Pre 1950s: -Residential Schools 1940-50s: -FNs integrated into public schools -huge failure  lack of trust  racist curriculum ***Savage common term to describe FNs in textbooks***

4 Changes in Education 1970s 1972 “Indian Control of Indian Education” (Native Brotherhood Report) Recommendations of the report: -Aboriginal education philosophy in curriculum -educational goals for aboriginal students -culturally relevant programming -increased parent involvement Results: -increased funding for BAND operated schools

5 Changes in Education 1980s 1987 Sullivan Report -report on public education in Canada -heavily criticizes govt. for failure to educate FNs Recommendations + Results: -create culturally relevant / local curriculum -new branch of gov’t created:  Ministry of Aboriginal Education BC 1 st Nations 12 Eng. First Peoples

6 Education Today Increased resources and effort to improve education: 1. Increased funding for BAND SCHOOLS Outma Sqilx’w Cultural School, Penticton Indian band

7 Education Today 2. More Aboriginal Content Courses + Stronger Aboriginal programming -Provincially examinable courses: -Others: Aboriginal Leadership, Language Courses Aboriginal programs in all schools -Ab. Ed. Teachers -Ab. Ed. Educational Assistants -Ab. Ed. rooms

8 Education Today 3. Enhancement Agreements: -commitments made by school district and Aboriginal partners -Métis, Band Council, Elders, Parents, Students, + educational work together -develop goals and strategies to support students

9 Education Today 4. Aboriginal Headstart Program -Elementary school program (on and off reserve) -focuses on: * Language + Culture * Reading + Writing * Health + Nutrition * Parental Involvement

10 Education Today 5. Post Secondary Aboriginal Programming -every college / university in Canada has: Aboriginal Support Programs
