Marbles essay edit/revise 1.Find your essay rough draft 2.Find sentence opening sheet (should be stapled to your essay) 3.Find highlighter or correcting pen OR pencil

Is your paper double spaced? Are your paragraphs indented 5 spaces? Spell out numbers that are ten or less---seven, three, ten Do not put The End at the end No smiley faces or multiple exclamation points!!!!!!!!! Replace the word a lot with the word many

No texting language or abbreviations --- u, lol… Check for run-on sentences---change and add punctuation No crazy fonts and big sizes---use normal fonts, size 12, Times New Roman Check use of there/their/they’re and it’s/its Avoid using the dead words: stuff, thing, nice, great, good, very, really, interesting---use a thesaurus and change these words to something more descriptive Don’t forget to use spell-check & proofread story Do not put your name at the end---use a proper heading IN TOP RIGHT CORNER

Look at your title… Is it boring? Is it too simple? (hint: these are too simple) The Elgin Marbles or The Parthenon Marbles? Look at FORMAT:  Single spaced heading in top right corner?  Title slightly larger and centered?  Double spaced? Paragraphs are all indented? (**hint** to indent, hit TAB button ONCE)  Four clear paragraphs?

Look for contractions and circle them… Can’t becomes cannot Don’t becomes do not Wasn’t becomes was not  No contractions---they are too informal for your FORMAL essay

Pronoun usage? Did you use any personal pronouns? Circle them: Imeyou  I think… The Elgin marbles should stay.  I believe….The Parthenon marbles should return.  I know….. REWORD them now OR ask for help from your partner.

Look at intro  Did you explain what the marbles are to someone who doesn’t know?  Did you explain who Lord Elgin was and what he did to the Parthenon that Pericles and Phidias built?  Did you explain why the Turks let Elgin have the marbles?

Elgin Marbles intro paragraph This introduction must include: A brief history of what the Elgin marbles (where they started, where they are now) Mention Lord Elgin and his job as ambassador State your position: stay or return? Be thinking about your title as you write

Look at claim Is it located at the END of the intro? Does it have the 3 parts? (should be a semi-long sentence!) 1) Specifically what? (The marbles) 2) Arguable statement? (Stay or go?) 3) Explaining audience significance? Does it contain one of these phrases? Although, even though, because, as long as….

1.Make the topic specific 1.Continue with an arguable phrase 1.Explain the significance to the audience Exactly who? When? How many? Which ones? Where? Does…. Does not…. Should…. Should not…. Highlights… Ignores….., proving that…., resulting in…., making us doubt…, reminding us that…., showing us that…. Part 1Part 2 Part 3

The marbles taken from the Parthenon in Athens should be returned to their majestic home reminding us… The marbles Lord Elgin stole from the Parthenon in Athens, Greece should be returned to their homeland making us doubt that… The Elgin marbles belong in the British museum resulting in the knowledge that….

The conclusion usually has two parts: 1.The summary statement is one or two sentences which restates the claim in a fresh way to reinforce the essay's main idea. 2. The clincher is a final thought which should create a lasting impression on the reader…it “echoes” back to intro paragraph. Answers the “So What?” question….why are we arguing about artifacts?

Conclusions… Asking, “So what?” What does this all mean? Why are we arguing about these artifacts? What’s the takeaway idea? How would Pericles feel or react? How would Athena feel or react?

You will turn in all parts and pieces with PERFECT FINAL COPY ON TOP OF STACK WITH ONE STAPLE! All pages go in same direction, one staple in top left corner.
