What was the 1st thing the USA had to do after Independence? What government did they choose? Democracy is a government in which people vote for leaders to represent them and to pass laws and decide policies. Monarchy is rule by King or Queen who gains power by being born into a royal family or by marrying royalty. Oligarchy is rule by a small group of people who select themselves as leaders. Plutocracy is a government controlled by a culture’s wealthiest members. Theocracy is a government controlled by a culture’s religious leader or leaders. Dictatorship is a type of government in which one individual holds power and makes all political and military decisions. Dictators often seize power with the help of armed followers. Totalitarianism / Communism is the belief that every aspect of government, work, education, the arts, science—in fact all of life and thought—must match the beliefs of those in power. Confederation is a system where the National or Central Government is given only a few powers, while most of the power is reserved for the States.

Were the Articles a good thing? Absolutely It was the 1 st government for the new nation! And That’s Important!!!!!

The Articles of Confederation The Articles had 2 major achievements: The Articles had 2 major achievements: 1) Bringing the Revolutionary War to a successful conclusion 2) North West Ordinance (plan for governing the western lands)

Where did we get the ideas for our new government? European Ideas; European Ideas; Magna Carta English Bill of Rights John Locke Both of these were laws that stopped the King from having too much power. The government needs to protect the people’s rights.

Where else did we get ideas? American Ideas and Documents; American Ideas and Documents; Mayflower Compact Declaration of Independence New England Town Meetings Virginia House of Burgesses Written examples of self-government and The ideas upon which our gov should be based. These were models of Representative Government where citizens got to address the issues in their community.

How was the government under the Articles of Confederation organized? Only 1 Branch of Government Confederation Congress Each states was represented and had only 1 vote. It was the whole National Gov. Confederation President The "president" under the Articles was the presiding officer of Congress. He was not the President of today. There was No system of courts. That was left to each states.

What Powers did it Have? Only the Confederation Congress had power. Only the Confederation Congress had power. Borrow Money. Make Treaties with the Native Tribes. Make Treaties with Foreign Countries. Settle conflicts between states. What did it Not have the power to do? Could not Tax. Could not keep an Army. Could not enforce any of its’ decisions.

Conclusion Why Did the Founding Fathers believe the Articles needed to be replaced by the US Constitution? The nation needed to function as ONE united country & not 13 small unorganized nations. Shay’s rebellion proved the need to strengthen the government.

Overall Impression of the Articles It was a good start. It was a good start. It was the 1 st government and it got the new country started and working together.
