2 DCLG’s Approach to Integration DCLG is the Department responsible for building strong, integrated communities. Under our approach to Integration, Creating the Conditions, we seek to build a common identity by celebrating the things people have in common, encouraging responsibility and participation, and increasing social mobility. We have put in place a suite of 40+ “exemplar projects”, each demonstrating a different aspect of Creating the Conditions. These projects cover all sorts of themes… English LanguageCommunity Music Asian Cuisine Reporting Hate Crime OnlineSport

Approach to Integration We aim for projects to be inclusive, to encourage participants to engage with people from different backgrounds, and foster a sense of local identity and belonging. But, there are particular areas of the country which face greater integration challenges, so projects are naturally concentrated in these areas. DCLG does not believe in targeting money and projects at single groups – ethnic or religious. We want projects to be open to all, and to reflect the makeup of their area. 3

What is this programme about? Using the legacy of Nelson Mandela as the basis for a Leadership programme for young people. This programme would fit under the Responsibility, Participation, and Social Mobility strands of the Approach to Integration. We have identified thematic gaps for projects which link young people and responsibility 4

What will it entail? We want to the programme to … Deliver workshops for groups of young people to look at Mandela’s legacy and principles of leadership, responsibility and community participation Create and share learning materials from the workshop online Assist young people to develop their own ideas, in pairs or small groups, for projects to benefit their local communities Facilitate one pair/group from each workshop to implement their project, with the aid of a small grant. Hold a final, celebratory event for these pairs/groups on International Nelson Mandela Day 2015 – 18 th July 5
