Sending emails seems immediate But it actually happens in stages… When one person sends a message, it is stored on email servers When the receiver logs-on, message are forwarded (or downloaded) to them So emails use the store & forward system…

Email – Purposes & Uses 20 B Email Server A Store & Forward Messages are stored on the email server & then ‘forwarded’ when the receiver clicks to download

Email – Purposes & Uses 20 Email Server Don’t both need to be online at same time So can use email at time that suits you! Different to Instant Messaging or VoIP

Email – Purposes & Uses 20 Emails are sent from an sender’s outbox and received in a recipient’s Inbox The sender & recipient do not have to be online at the same time That’s great when sending emails to people in different global time zones This applies to staff in a big company, as well as families & friends
