2  HERESY = going against the church and going against god  THE INQUISITION = church machinery designed root out/uncover heresy  JOHN WYCLIF 1. Leader of the Lollards in England 2. Attacked the power and authority of the Pope 3. Said bible is the only source of authority 4. Translated the bible into english/vernacular  JOHN HUS 1. Bohemian reformer -> attacked clerical and papal corruption 2. Summoned to Rome for a “discussion” -> arrested and tried for heresy -> burned at the stake

3  The Renaissance Papacy = the popes from the end of the Great Schism to the beginning of the Reformation in the early 16 th century  Popes became more concerned with temporal power than spiritual leadership  Pope Julius II -> “the warrior pope” -> led armies in battle  Pope Leo X ->
