The enemies are those audio guides By Jefferson Hack

“a conversation with Hans Obrist has infinite and frenetic possibilities” – In layman’s terms, the man does not lack the gift of gab. – It has been said of Obrist that he has made conversation into an art form, with a ravenous appetite and the ability to tease out those sparkling and unexpected details. (Hack, 2011) Hack said that Obrist has cornered and interviewed the ever expanding spectrum of the great and the good from architects to linguists, philosophers, scientists and filmmakers. He has been compiling a kind of ongoing Smithsonian Institute for the state of aesthetic thought in the 21 st century. (Hack, 2011) Just look at the names that have been mentioned in this article. Names like Rem Koolhaas and Zaha Hadid both architects, Louise Bourgeois and Richard Hamilton an example of the artists. These are just a sampling of the names that are in this chapter. But it exemplifies Obrist’s ideas that as a curator you need to look at emerging new artists and cities. Hans Obrist Image, 2012

Obrist has taken his unique perspective of radical thinking and turned it to curating. For him it is the ability to let go of control and create a non-linear experience. (Hack, 2011) Some venues that Obrist has used: his kitchen, airplane cabin, monastery library and a sewage treatment plant as well as a glass display case (vitrine). This makes the point of the curator. It is in the expansion of an idea. Of taking it into concepts that have not been thought of to create a unique experience Nesbit & Betthauser, 2013

What does this say about the curatorial vision of the man named Hans Obrist o He sees art differently, and not just paintings. He wants people to experience art, to see shapes and sounds. o It’s about the time spent perusing the exhibits. Not just about the information that can be given to patrons, art can be an instinctual, experience. He says that conversations are not set up to be formal interviews. o He likes that sustained conversations are more interesting. What is the benefit of Obrist doing his interview as a sustained conversation vs. an interview style? o Because the location changes, you don’t risk saying the same thing. It’s when you are having a regular conversation that some of the good stuff is said. (Hack, 2011)

The fight against cultural amnesia. It’s not just about recording history, it’s about making history. (Hack, 2011) What does this mean? As a society we can become numb to shapes and designs, the masterpieces that buildings can be, the way a sculpture is fired, the way that art is hung on a wall or in a glass display case. With each decade of art, the forms that it takes changes. It adapts because people’s ideas are expanding and changing with society and current technology. Zaha Hadid Architects

Why does Obrist say, “the enemies are those audio guides” o The audio guides don’t give people the chance to really experience the art. Whether the art is on a wall, it can be felt tacitly. Maybe the art is something that you touch in order to experience it. Maybe the art is all about the art in a soundless state, and you become a part of the exhibit. These are just a few ways that the audio guides take away the experience of feeling the art and not being on a time schedule. Obrist says that it is important to inject experiences of slowness in the exhibitions, it’s not just about getting through the exhibit. (Hack, 2011)
