Accelerated Motion
2
Changing Velocity In each of the diagrams below, 5 pictures were taken at intervals of 1 second. Can you describe what is going on in each?
3
Acceleration Acceleration: The rate at which an objects velocity changes. Instantaneous Acceleration: Found by drawing a tangent line, then finding the slope of the tangent, on the velocity vs. time graph at the point interested in.
4
Find the acceleration of the object represented in the graph below. Acceleration =
5
Example 1 Refer to the graph below. Find the average acceleration of the train during the following intervals. A)0.0 to 5.0 sec B)15.0 to 20.0 sec C)0.0 to 40.0 sec
6
Example 2 Describe the motion of the dog in the graph below.

Direction of Acceleration Which way are each of the objects accelerating? 1) 2) 3) 4)
9
Describing Velocity vs. Time Graphs Describe the motion in objects A through E.
10
Relating Position, Velocity, and Acceleration. From the graph given, draw the other two corresponding graphs. Assume that initial position and velocity equal zero when needed.

A top fuel dragster can run the quarter mile in 4.45 seconds. What is his acceleration? If gravity, g, accelerates objects at 9.8 m/s 2, how many g’s is this?
16
You are in a Top Fuel Drag Racer doing a constant 530 km/h. A)How fast is this in mph? B) You see a deer on the road 300 m in front of you and you poop your pants / pray. It takes you 0.45 seconds to react and deploy your 5 parachute system. You experience a deceleration of 5 G, and your retinas detach. Will you blindly hit the deer?
17
Mr. Heer is at a stop light. A speeding Tony is traveling at a constant speed of 50.0 m/s when he passes a standing still Heer. Little does Tony know, Mr. Heer is packing nitrous. Mr. Heer accelerates at 10.0 m/s 2. How fast will Mr. Heer be going when Tony is eating his dust?
18
Free Fall You throw a ball downward with a velocity of 5.0 m/s. A)How fast is it going 3.0 seconds later? B)How far has it gone? C)What if you threw it upwards with a speed of 5 m/s, how fast would it be going after 3 seconds?
