Society Bulletin Sharing & preservation of Knowledge 3/11/2011 19 IFMS GM2 2010 – Open access of bulletins through Society's Webpage Vol 1 up to Vol 18 (2008) Objective – Open Knowledge. Attract more readers and Papers We have Institutional and Individual subscribers Should we give up the revenue after open access?
20
Pros and Cons of Modernization 3/11/2011 20 IFMS GM2 Printing of the Society’s Bulletin cost about 90% of our Society’s overall annual expense. Publishing e-books can avoid this considerable expenditure item. It is understandable that quite a number of readers still prefer hardcopy. Printing a small number of hardcopies is economically not feasible.
21
Challenges 3/11/2011 21 IFMS GM2 About 3 to 4 academic papers per year. Need to attract more academic paper submission. Indeed China and Hong Kong are not short of academic papers. Most of them in Chinese. New Effort: Trying to translate 5 Chinese academic papers to English for the Volume 20, 2010 issue. Now we discover the manpower for language translation is enormous.
22
Challenges 3/11/2011 22 IFMS GM2 How to attract high quality papers? Indeed China and Hong Kong are publishing many academic papers in meteorology. Possibility of SCI list journal? What are the requirements? What are the procedures? What are the cost?
23
Publication Policies and Consensus 3/11/2011 23 IFMS GM2 Should Society news and events report be excluded? Solely meteorology, weather and climate content? Cross discipline but meteorology related Disaster Air pollution Satellite Computer Energy Health Transport
24
Exchange with other Meteorological Societies 3/11/2011 24 IFMS GM2 The Executive Board will consider possibilities of more interactions with other meteorological societies and engaging more with other partner organizations. Shenzhen Meteorological and Disaster Mitigation Society is visiting our Society this coming Saturday November 5, 2011.
