7. Land of mountains: Greece did not form near rivers. Farming was much more difficult. Mountains divided up the people living in Greece into different city-states. There were each like small countries of their own. Ancient Greek City-States

10. Mycenae: Built 20 ft thick walls around city for protection. Took plunder! (valuables seized at war) Ancient Greek City-States

11. There were many city-states but 2 of the biggest were Sparta and Athens

12. Sparta: o Located in a place that was good for growing food. o Other city-states constantly tried to conqueror Sparta o Life was all about the military: young boys at age 7 were sent to begin military training! Ancient Greek City-States

13. Sparta: o Men were the only citizens but women had rights! o Women had to be strong to take care of the household while the men were off fighting and to produce warrior children. o Ruled by kings Ancient Greek City-States

14. Athens: o Located along the Aegean Sea, developed an excellent navy o Ruled by a democracy (power to the people!) o Women had little rights o Had a Golden Age! Ancient Greek City-States
