How did the mountains in Greece effect their civilizations?

Land of mountains: Greece did not form near rivers. Farming was much more difficult. Mountains divided up the people living in Greece into different city-states. There were each like small countries of their own. Ancient Greek City-States

What was the main reason Greece developed into city-states? a) They did not get along b) They did not want to trade with each other c) The were physically isolated d) They didn’t know others existed STAND UP/SIT DOWN:

Minoans: Civilization on the Greek island of Crete Were wealthy traders Controlled trade and patrolled the seas to protect the kingdom from invaders Enjoyed jumping over bulls! Ancient Greek City-States

Mycenae: Built 20 ft thick walls around city for protection. Took plunder! (valuables seized at war) Ancient Greek City-States

There were many city-states but 2 of the biggest were Sparta and Athens

Sparta: o Located in a place that was good for growing food. o Other city-states constantly tried to conqueror Sparta o Life was all about the military: young boys at age 7 were sent to begin military training! Ancient Greek City-States

Sparta: o Men were the only citizens but women had rights! o Women had to be strong to take care of the household while the men were off fighting and to produce warrior children. o Ruled by kings Ancient Greek City-States

Athens: o Located along the Aegean Sea, developed an excellent navy o Ruled by a democracy (power to the people!) o Women had little rights o Had a Golden Age! Ancient Greek City-States

Athens: The Golden Age: o This means that Athens had a time period of great success. Athens built wonderful buildings and monuments. Philosophers such as Socrates, Plato and Aristotle extended human knowledge of the world Athenians were concerned with the arts such as theatre, sculpture and literature. Ancient Greek City-States
