What’s my approach to medicine ? What’s my approach to medicine ?
2
Medicine Through Time Time periods, areas of medicine and factors In your pairs see how many time periods, areas of medicine and factors you can remember How many can you get in 2 minutes?
3
To understand the structure of the Medicine paper To apply our new knowledge to answering exam questions To assess your own work and achievement! What do we want to achieve today?
4
Section A – 26 marks. * 4 questions based on sources about disease and infection *3 sources – all pictures *You must answer all of them! a = 4 marks (8 mins) b = 6 marks (12 mins) c = 8 marks (16 mins) d = 8 marks (16 mins)
5
Source A What does source A suggest to you about understanding of disease and infection in the prehistoric times? (4 marks)
6
Target: You use knowledge and understanding to make an inference about the source Level 1 = Select detail from the source or write about the time period (1 mark) Level 2 = Say what the source means using your own knowledge or the source (simple inference) (2-3 marks) Level 3 = Say what the source means and put it into context using own knowledge (complex inference) (4marks)
7
Source A tells me that the prehistoric people knew how to cut into a skull for operations as it shows a skull with a hole in. They believed that this would get rid of the evil spirits. How many marks would you give this answer out of 4?
8

Source A tells me that the prehistoric people knew how to cut into a skull for operations as it shows a skull with a hole in. This was called trepanning and used to be done to people who had headaches. They believed that this would get rid of the evil spirits. This shows a supernatural approach to illness, showing the prehistoric beliefs in the spirit world and their affect over their health.

The scarab beetle was often used in charms by the Ancient Egyptians to prevent illnesses caused by the blocking of channels in the human body. The books of Thoth instructed doctors to give people these charms after bleeding of purging.
11
What different understanding of disease and infection are suggested by source B? (6 marks) You need to take 12 minutes to complete this question. Ensure you include the following: SPOT THE DIFFERENCE Complex inference from the source Place it in its historical context Really CLEARLY compare the bits from sources A and B that are different
12
Target: You use your own knowledge and understanding to make an inference from two sources Level 1 = Answer that just refers to Source B (1-2 marks) Level 2 = Answer that shows simple understanding of both sources OR Answer refers to both sources but only makes an inference from one (3-4 marks) Level 3 = Answer that shows a developed understanding of both sources and puts them into context to explain the differences (5-6 marks)
14
Why was there a different understanding of disease and infection in the Egyptian times. Explain your answer using sources A and B and your own knowledge. (8 marks) You need to take 16 minutes to complete this question. Ensure you include the following: Place each source in its historical context Explain several reasons why they are different (author/motive/date etc)
15
Target: Explain and understand different ideas and attitudes and how they change over time Level 1 = Answer that selects detail from the source OR Answer that says how the sources are different, but doesn’t explain why (1-2 marks) Level 2 = Answer shows simple reasons about different attitudes based on changes over time, place or author (3-5 marks) Level 3 = Answer shows developed reasoning about different attitudes based on changes over time, place or author (6-8 marks)

Source C – The Theory of the 4 humours created by Hippocrates in the Ancient Greek period Understanding of disease and infection have improved at different times for different reasons. Why is this? Explain your answer using sources A, B and C and your own knowledge. (8 marks)
18
For this question you need to talk about factors and explain how they led to change. You need to show links between factors You need to say which factor had most effect on change You must spend 16 minutes writing this answer You need to plan it before you start so you don’t get mixed up
19
Level 1 = Answer provides general statements, describes single factors or gives factual details about improvement (1-2 marks) Level 2 = Answer comments briefly on several reasons for improvement (3-4 marks) Level 3 = Answer recognises and explains several factors for improvement in specific detail from sources and own knowledge(5-6 marks) Level 4 = Answer does the same as level 3 but has a conclusion and links factors for improvement (7-8 marks)
