Close your eyes…. Imagine it’s a hot, hot, hot summer day. A day when you open the door and it takes your breath away. As soon as you step outside your hair is sticking to the back of your neck where it’s wet from sweat. You feel sweat run down your back as you and your friend walk to the pool. Ahhhh a nice cool swim Ack! All this way and the pool is closed. Well Rapid is just down the street…..yum soft ice-cream! But the machine is down and the coolers of popsicles are empty…..everyone had the same idea. Sigh, time to start the looooong hike back home. Just as you pass the 4-way you see your mom driving by, you flag her down, excited to jump into a cool air-conditioned vehicle. ‘ Sorry hun the a/c is broken it’s going to the garage tomorrow…..grrrr

 Choose a partner who is shorter or taller than you  Discuss  What would our world be like if we had never learned how to warm or cool anything. My partner __________ and I think that the world would be ___________because ______________.

Other than the sun what was one of the earliest sources of heat that humans put under their control? FIRE

Long ago, people living in caves used fire to warm themselves, cook their food, and provide safety from wild animals that are naturally afraid of fire.

We have all seen or heard about forest fires and how difficult they can be to control. What could’ve been some dangers to cavemen and their families when they had no choice but to have open fires?

Over time people had to develop tools and technology to make using fire safer and easier. Pot-bellied stoves were used by early pioneers to heat their homes and cook their food. The Victorian Model still heated the house but it made cooking easier with a built in oven Fire places were usually found in many rooms because these were peoples only heat source Fireplaces today are generally used for decoration and not as a main heat source or cook stove. Many fireplaces are electric or gas – you only need to flick a switch! Most homes are heated by furnaces and cooking is done on separate stoves. People are still inventing new tools and technology to make our lives easier. The new rage is the pellet stove and boiler

Discuss with a partner why it was necessary for people to ‘harness’ fire? My partner ____________ and I think the most significant reason people harnessed fire was _____________________________________________.

A luxury is something that people like to have around because it makes life easier, more comfortable or enjoyable. People can live without luxury items. A necessity is something that people must have in order to survive. Technology becomes a necessity when it is the only way to do something that we need to have done.

Luxury Necessity Luxury
