Warm-Up Factor out the GCF. 3x 3 +6x 2 -9x Work with your partner to complete the number puzzler worksheet!
2
Objectives 8.6 Factoring x 2 + bx + c The students will be able to factor a polynomial that has a coefficient of one by identifying the structure and patterns of each polynomial and working to break it down into factors.
3
Multiply: (x + 2)(x + 3) x 2 + 5x + 6 Where did the x 2 come from? Where did the x term come from? Where did the constant come from? What two operations did we use in this process?
4
How do I factor x 2 + bx + c ? STEPS Look for a GCF! Find two numbers that MULTIPLY to give you “c”…the last term! Find two numbers that ADD/SUBTRACT to give you “b”…the middle term! Record your results in the “X”. Set up your parenthesis which each factor.
5
x 2 + 7x + 10
6
x 2 + 12x + 27
7
x 2 + 12x + 32
8
2x 2 – 12x + 16
9
3x 2 – 36x + 96
10
x 2 – 2x – 24
11
x 2 + 7x – 8
12
5x 2 – 30x – 135

How to Solve by Factoring Move all of the terms to one side of the equation, leaving the other side as 0. Factor the side with all of the terms. Use the zero product property. What do you think the zero product property says? If a b = 0, Then…
14
Solve: x 2 + 17x + 30 = 0
15
Solve: x 2 + 48 = 19x
16
Solve: x 2 + 10x = 200
17
Solve: x 2 – 10x – 200 = 0
18
Solve: x 2 – 45x + 450 = 0
