WARM UP What are the solutions of each equation? 1.) x 2 + 4 = 4 2.) x 2 + 16 = 0 3.) x 2 – 49 = 0
2
9.4 FACTORING TO SOLVE QUADRATIC EQUATIONS
3
OBJECTIVE Solve quadratic equations by factoring.
4
ZERO – PRODUCT PROPERTY For any real numbers a and b, if ab = 0, then a = 0 or b = 0. Example: If (x + 3)(x + 2) = 0, then x + 3 = 0 or x + 2 = 0.
5
EXAMPLE 1 – USING THE ZERO-PRODUCT PROPERTY What are the solutions of the equation (2x + 3)(x – 1) = 0?
6
EXTRA EXAMPLE 1 What are the solutions of (x + 1)(x – 5) = 0?
7
EXAMPLE 2 – SOLVING BY FACTORING What are the solutions of the equation x 2 – x – 12?
8
EXTRA EXAMPLE 2 What are the solutions of the equation x 2 – 5x – 14 = 0?
9
EXAMPLE 3 – WRITING IN STANDARD FORM FIRST What are the solutions of the equation 3x 2 + 13x = -4?
10
EXTRA EXAMPLE 3 What are the solutions of x 2 + 14x = - 49?
