The Second Great Awakening In the early 1800s a wave of religious enthusiasm spread across the nation. Many new religions were started. People came from miles to hear preachers at camp meetings called “revivals.”

People began to believe that in order to achieve salvation, one must not only repent personal sin, but work for moral perfection in society. This encouraged many people to join reform groups to make society better.

There were many reform movements. You will work in groups to research and report on one of the following movements: 1.Utopian 2.Transcendentalism 3.Temperance 4.Education 5.Special Needs 6.Abolition 7.Women’s Rights
