1 Writing 1 The Second Semester 2015-2016 Presented by Dr. Mohamed Sha’at

2 Aims of the Session Students are expected to: - Write a short paragraph describing a friend. - Develop ideas for writing different paragraphs. -Compare their ideas with their colleagues. -Rewrite some sentences correctly.

3 Write a short paragraph that describes your best friend.

4 Khalid is an old man in his mid sixties. His face is thin and wrinkled. His hair is short and graying and his eyebrows are bushy. On the other hand Nora, his sister, is in her late twenties. She has straight fair hair, round, blue eyes and a turned up nose. She is approximately 1.7 meters tall.

5 You are in your flat which is in the seventh floor. The fire alarm goes on and you cannot go out from the door as it is on fire. The window looks like the only exit. What would you do? - Jump from the window. - Shouting and screaming. - Yell for people to help. - Phone the firemen to help.

6 You have just finished the brainstorming session which is the first step of writing a paragraph. When you brainstorm, you gather information from your own experience about your topic.

7 Next Saturday is your grandmother’s birthday. What will you get for her? Why? Some Candies Some balloons A ring A bunch/ pack of flowers A cake A watch A veil A scarf

8 Consider the brainstorming of paragraph 2; an easy sandwich. Make an egg salad: - ingredients: (eggs, mayo, salt, pepper, olives oil) -steps: boil the eggs, mash the eggs, add salt, mix the ingredients, put it in refrigerator, eat)

9 Consider the following points, p.30: - Brainstorming is not a linear or a consecutive process. -- Brainstorming is a messy process. - Writers tend to move from one idea to another till they reach a general outline for their writing. - Brainstorming helps the writers visualize the paragraph. Invite students to brainstorm ideas that are related to one of the paragraphs they had discussed using the diagram p.34.
