3 To determine whether certain traits are discrete or continuous. Traits: Trichome number Erecta phenotype Anthocyanin pigment

4 We hypothesized that the trichome number is discrete, and both the erecta phenotype trait and the color are continuous. Concerning trichome number, we generally believed that there could be either a large amount or a very small amount. We initially thought the plants would all be about the same height and color.

6 Controls: water, miracle grow, temperature, amount of light The seed lines and the jiffy plugs were isolated by being placed into a light box

7 1.Collect materials 2.Sterilize the seeds 3.Transfer seeds to petri dishes 4.Place in the refrigerator for three days 5.Remove from refrigerator and add water, miracle grow, and mold inhibitor 6.Place in the light box at around 20 degrees Celsius 7.Observe and water as needed 8.Add sucrose solution Cold Shock treatment:

8 Jiffy plugs: 1.Use same methods as cold shock treatment, but place the seeds on jiffy plugs. 2.Five seeds of each line placed into each jiffy plug 3.Placed with plastic lid in the light box 4.Miracle grow and water also added to each jiffy plug 5.Everything in this experiment was sterilized to prevent as much mutation as possible

9 1.Sucrose solution was previously prepared for the experiment 2.About one drop was placed into each microfuge tube 3.A mature leaf was cut at the petiole 4.The cut end of each leaf placed in the solution of each tube. 5.Placed in the light box for 2 days Sucrose Assay:

10 Due to extreme heat and light intensity on the cold shock treatment, the seeds failed to properly continue germinating. There were no traces of purple in the plants. We discontinued the petri dish segment.

11 Our trichome number came out as continuous with a range from 5 to 42. Erecta phenotype traits are discrete. Out of the 9 plugs, 5 had the erecta phenotypes trait. The anthocyanin pigment trait was assumed to be continuous. There were five plants that had varying anthocyanin pigmentation. 6 of our 9 plants were flowering. There was no viable data from the sucrose assay.

15 Erecta-phenotypes are discrete. Trichome numbers are continuous. Anthocyanin pigment trait is continuous
