3 Australia Physical Geography –Flat and Dry (refer to Climate Map on pg ___) –Highlands of the eastern coast create a rainshadow. Great Dividing Range –Outback Central and western plains and plateaus –Mostly desert and grassland

4 Australia Great Barrier Reef –Created by build up of coral creating a coral reef. –Among the most important landforms on the planet due to ability to support life.

5 Australia Modern way of life is dominated by British roots The government is setup like Britain, but maintains characteristics of U.S. –Parlaiment and Prime Minister-British –Constitution and Separation of power between federal gov’t and states- U.S.

6 Australia Natives are called Aborigines European diseases and aggression conquered most of the aborigines and shrank the population to what it is today. –300,000 in population then to 50,000 today. Australia was setup originally to thin out an overcrowded prison system and rid itself of people it did not want.

7 Australia Australia has few resources –Along the coastal regions there is some mining. –In the interior there is mostly just grazing of cattle and sheep.

8 New Zealand Separated from Australia by the Tasman Sea Created out of tectonic forces pushing the land up –Very mountainous some peaks contain year-round ice caps. –Volcanically active Geysers

9 New Zealand Two Islands –North Island Hilly with a lining of springs, geysers, and volcanoes –South Island Longer and mountainous Dotted with lakes formed from glacial melt and contains many fjords

10 New Zealand A mix of Northern European and The native culture of the Maori. The government is essentially the same as the British. Economy is similar to that of Australia –grazing and in the interior –manufacturing and trade along the coasts

11 Pacific Islands Lay within the tropics Formed by volcanic activity or from coral buildup Grouped into three main island groups –Micronesia “Small Islands” –Melanesia “Black Islands” –Polynesia “Many Islands”

12 Pacific Islands Many were unknown and were isolated until WWII –After the war the islands were divided into trust territories (areas supervised by other nations) Islands are too small for large scale farming thus leads many to subsistent farming. –Coconuts, pineapples, bananas and fishing can be big industry if Island can support it –Bigger islands have cash crops of rubber, sugarcane, or coffee.

13 Pacific Islands The people of the Pacific Islands tend to want to maintain traditional ways of life and resist modernizing. Tourism is becoming the major contributor to island economies.

14 Antarctica For the test you will need to know the vocabulary. –Crevasse –Ice shelf –Pack ice –Convergence zone –krill

15 Antarctica For the test you will need to understand the reason for claiming land and why countries did or did not follow the trend.
