J.202 is a new standard that allows content providers to roll out value-added interactive TV (iTV) services to any network without modification o ITU-T Rec. J.170 is aimed at increasing security in cable networks that might be vulnerable to denial of service, theft of service... o Recommendations that cover Internet over cable, VoIP over cable, videoconference over cable are all important issues.

16 ITU-T 16 30 May 2003 5th Annual Meeting for Telecom Development, Beirut ITU-T Study Group 13 o Multi-protocol and IP-based networks and their internetworking o SG13 is working on standards that will allow VPNs to work over all kinds of networks – optical, MPLS, IP etc o It is also concentrating on performance parameters and availability objectives for Ethernet, Optical and Satellite networks

17 ITU-T 17 30 May 2003 5th Annual Meeting for Telecom Development, Beirut ITU-T Study Group 15 o Optical and other transport networks o SG15 is working on ADSL 2 and VDSL o Gigabit-capable Passive Optical Networks (G-PONs) that are a further step towards all-optical networks. PON technology is used in the local loop to connect residential and SME end users premises in an all-fibre network o Metropolitan optical networks are the most advanced technological answer for the increasing demand for bandwidth from enterprises and service providers.

H.264 video coding likely to find use in a wide variety of applications from mobile phones to High Definition TV revolutionize video picture quality over networks such as the Internet, 3G Wireless and the PSTN. o ITU-T Rec. H.323 95 per cent of all VoIP minutes use this solid standard o New topic E-Health

19 ITU-T 19 30 May 2003 5th Annual Meeting for Telecom Development, Beirut ITU-T Study Group 17 o Data networks and software for Telecommunication o Study group 17 does a lot of work on security – mobile, telebiometrics, communication system security o It’s work on languages sees it moving into the area of UML support by adding a UML profile to all ITU languages. Harmonization of all languages is a key objective.
