3 Before we start reading the text let’s get acquainted with some words and expressions: cottage – a small house old cottage, new cottage, nice cottage enormous – v ery big/large enormous garden, enormous house expensive – c osting a lot of money expensive house, expensive flat plenty of – m any, much, a lot of, lots of p lenty of flowers, plenty of trees enough - a s much or as many as is necessary e nough fruit trees, enough vegetables

4 There are 22 million homes in Britain — big homes and small homes, old cottages and new buildings, houses and flats. Many British people love old houses and these are often more expensive than modern ones. They also love gardening so they often have a garden at the back of the house and another at the front. Some gardens are very small with just one tree and a few flowers. Others are enormous with plenty of flowers and enough vegetables and fruit trees. Two third of the families in Britain own their houses. A typical British house is for a family of two, three or four people. There are two floors in the traditional house; the ground floor and the first floor. On the ground floor there is a sitting room(a living room), a dining room and a kitchen. There is a bathroom and bedrooms on the first floor. Small houses have one or two bedrooms. Large houses have three or more. British people like their homes and often say, “There is no place like home” and “East or West, home is best.”

19 I like my bedroom best because it's a very bright room. It gets a lot of sunshine. It has got a table and I can sit and work at the table with my computer. And there is a fireplace in my room. It doesn't work but it gives the room the atmosphere of a real British house. What is my house for me? Oh, my house is my home, isn't it? It's a place where I can relax and rest. I can invite guests there. It's a pleasant place to be! 1) What room does Miss Kenny like? 2) Why does Miss Kenny like her room? 3) What is there in her bedroom? 4) What kind of place is Miss Kenny’s bedroom for her?
