Young Structural Engineers In The Making Primary School
2
What do engineers do? DESIGN- We think about how we want things to look like and how we want them to work: Buildings- Houses, office blocks Structures- Rollercoasters, towers Vehicles- Cars, train, aeroplanes To make them: Safe Easy to use Economical (making them as cheap to build as possible)
3
Examples of things designed by engineers Have you ever seen any of these things before??? They were all designed by ENGINEERS…
4
Have you seen this??? 30 St Mary’s Axe, London “THE GHERKIN”
5
Have you seen this??? The Royal Albert Bridge, Saltash Designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel Over 100 years old Still has the Great Western Railway trains running over it
6
Have you seen this??? The Eiffel Tower, Paris, France 117 years old!!! 323 metres tall
7
Today you are going to be… STRUCTURAL ENGINEERS!!!
8
So what do structural engineers design??? Buildings Bridges Towers Electricity Pylons Sports grounds Can you think of anything else???
9
Why is structural engineering important??? Tacoma Narrows bridge When it all goes wrong…
10
Tacoma Narrows Bridge
11
Your first job as structural engineers… bridge designers!!!
12
Materials for your bridge 2 A1 sized sheets of thick card 2 rolls of very sticky sellotape!!! One ball of string
13
Before you design your bridges… You need to think like structural engineers!!! So lets learn a few things that structural engineers need to know…
14
TENSION- Giving things a stretch…
15
COMPRESSION- Giving things a squash…
16
Examples Here are some examples of structures with parts in tension, compression and bending… Lets have some fun trying these ideas out…
17
What types of bridges could you build??? Beam bridge
18
More bridge types… Truss bridge
19
More bridge types… Suspension bridge
20
Lets get engineering!!!
