CELLS

WHAT ARE CELLS? All living things are made up of cells. Cells are also called “the building blocks of life”

WHAT ARE LIVING THINGS? Another word for a living thing is an organism: – Plants – Animals – Fungi – Protists (single-celled organisms)

SINGLE-CELLED ORGANISMS Some living things are made of a single cell. Single-celled organisms have the same basic needs as all living things.

Some single-celled organisms have unique features that enable them to move by themselves. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bNTQLqWEpXU

MICROSCOPES Microscopes allow us to see cells of living things.

ASSESSMENT 1.All __________ are made of cells. A living things B nonliving things C minerals D rocks

ASSESSMENT 2.Microscopes are instruments that allow us to see __________. A atoms B cells C stars D birds

ASSESSMENT 3.Grant is curious and wants to see what the cells of a fly's wing look like. He gets the prepared slide from his teacher and finds the proper instrument. Grant should use __________ to see the cells. A a hand lens B binoculars C a telescope D a microscope

ASSESSMENT 4.Joe looked at a thin slice of onion under the microscope. He saw many rectangles in rows. The rectangles that Joe saw under the microscope are __________, which are found in all living things. A eggs B organelles C nuclei D cells

ASSESSMENT 5.All living things are made of __________. A eggs B seeds C cells D rooms

MULTI-CELLULAR ORGANISMS Simple multi-cellular organisms are made up of a collection of similar cells that work together (ex. sponge). Complex multi-cellular organisms have different types of tissue made up of one cell (ex. human). In complex animals and plants, cells are organized into systems. – Systems perform different tasks (ex. respiratory, digestive) – Systems contain unique types of cells that allow for unique tasks.

ANIMAL CELL PARTS Cell parts are called organelles, which each have a different function. – Think of an ecosystem: each part has an important job Animal cells have many organelles including: – Cell membrane – Cytoplasm – Nucleus – Vacuole

CELL MEMBRANE Controls what enters and exits the cell Provides support and protection for the cell Semi-permeable = lets some materials pass through

CYTOPLASM Jellylike area between the cell wall or membrane and the nucleus Holds the different kinds of organelles in place

NUCLEUS Directs the work of the cell Holds the cell’s instructions (DNA)

SMALL VACUOLES Is a “wastebin” for the cell, stores waste products

PLANT CELLS

LARGE VACUOLE Stores water and nutrients for the cell Can also store waste products for the cell

CELL WALL Controls what enters and exits the cell Provides support and protection for the cell

CHLOROPLASTS Chloroplasts contain chlorophyll Chlorophyll helps the plant create energy from sunlight
