2 Early Born in Cambridge, Massachusetts, 1894 – Died 1962, stroke Son of Unitarian minister Mother encouraged his to write and keep a journal – He started writing poetry at the age of 8

3 Youth Attended Harvard University – Received masters degree in 1916 Volunteered to serve as ambulance driver in WWI – He and a friend were wrongly arrested and imprisoned in France on charges of spying – They were released a few months later

4 Creativity After war, moved to New York’s Greenwich Village – Studied art in Paris for a while and published his first book of poetry Began to experiment with both language and art forms – Free verse in poetry; Cubism in art He did everything: prose, poetry, art, drama

5 Fight the Power He always rebelled against the authoritarian forces that tended to look down on being unique He married three times and only held regular jobs for a very short amount of time, which was against the social norms during that time saw language as a flexible tool to be manipulated (not a fixed system) – Played with punctuation, syntax, and usage

8 The Assignment Write, draw, analyze the poem in some way that is worthy of a grade; you are literally determining your grade with what you decide to present to me. :) Bwahahahahahahaha! Seriously, though, this is a grade and needs to show that you put in effort as such. Think themes, symbolism, all the Modernism traits we’ve gone over…make something that shows you not only have a brain but have also used it.
