Wed / Thurs May 13 Objective: Write the dissociation equation for any acid or base. Checkpoint: – You have 1 L of a 2.0 M solution of KOH. How many mL of this solution do you need to dilute to make 100 mL of a 1.0 M solution of KOH? Homework: – Dissociation equations worksheet (due Friday) – pH poster or PPT (due Monday)

You have 1 L of a 2.0 M solution of KOH. How many liters of this solution do you need to dilute to make 100 mL of a 1.0 M solution of KOH? M1M1 V1V1 (2.0 M) M2M2 V2V2 (V1)(V1) =(1.0 M)(100 mL) (2.0 M) V 1 = 50 mL = 0.05 L

Properties of Acids Acids taste sour, but you should NEVER taste an unknown acid. Acids react with active metals to produce hydrogen gas.hydrogen gas Acids react with bases to produce salt and water.salt and water Familiar products that contain acids: -Lemons, juice, soda, oranges, car batteries
5
Properties of Bases Tastes bitter, but you should NEVER taste an unknown base! Feels slippery… think of soap. Soap is a base. Bases react with acids to produce salt and water. Familiar products that contain bases: -Soap, baking soda, antacids, drain cleaner, ammonia
6
A chemical compound that increases the concentration of [H+] in solution. Examples: HCl H 2 CO 3 HBr H 2 SO 4 HCO 3 - Arrhenius Acids H+H+ + Cl - H+H+ + H+H+ +Br - H+H+ HSO 4 - +
7
A chemical compound that increases the concentration of [OH-] in solution. Examples: NaOH Ba(OH) 2 KOH Ca(OH) 2 2 OH - Arrhenius Bases Na + +OH - Ba 2+ + K+K+ + OH - Ca 2+ 2 OH - +
8
What is pH? A measure of how acidic or basic a substance is. The lower the pH, the more acidic the substance. The higher the pH, the more basic the substance.
9
Acid pH 7 (less than 7) pH Scale
10
Base pH 7 (greater than 7) pH Scale
11
Neutral pH = 7 (equals 7) pH Scale
12
If you had to be the sibling of a historical figure (someone you would find in a history textbook), who would you pick?
13
Write down the following pieces of information on your data table: 1. Deionized water 2. Tap water 3. Baking soda 4. NH 3 5. 0.1 M NaOH 6. 0.5 M NaOH 7. 1 M NaOH 8. 0.1 M HCl 9. 0.5 M HCl 11. vinegar 10. 1 M HCl 12. hexane 13. acetone 14. Lime water 15. antacid
