The Digestive System :Ad-Lib Game: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z7xKYNz9AS0

Functions  Digest the food we eat  Take the nutrients out of your food so your body can use it

Chemical Digestion  When chemicals in our body take large molecules & break them down into nutrients our body can send through our blood Saliva, stomach acid do this

EWW!!! What is that??  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v =Uzl6M1YlU3w http://www.youtube.com/watch?v =Uzl6M1YlU3w

Chemical Digestion Demo…  Put skittle in your mouth  DO NOT CHEW OR MOVE WITH TONGUE  *Remember what color you had  After about 30 seconds take it out…this is chemical digestion. Your saliva has broken down the sugar molecules so that they can be absorbed into your blood

Mechanical Digestion  The physical breaking and crushing of food Teeth, tongue, movement of smooth muscle in peristalsis (squeezing of tubes to move/crush food) do this

Mechanical/Physical Digestion  Now Chew the skittle & move around with your tongue!  This is physical or mechanical digestion! Breaking the food down into smaller pieces by ripping, crushing, and tearing it.

Components  Esophagus  Stomach  Small Intestine  Large Intestine  Gall bladder  Liver  Pancreas

Esophagus  the tube that connects your mouth and your stomach

Stomach  A stretchy bag that holds your food after you eat  Helps to break food into smaller pieces so your body can use it for energy and nutrition

Stomach Esophagus

Small Intestine  Tube that is 20 feet long.  Where nutrients is absorbed into the blood.  Food stays in your small intestine for 4 to 8 hours

Small Intestine

Large Intestine  Tube that is 5 feet long  Gets waste from small intestine  Liquids are absorbed here  Waste stays for 10 to 12 hours

Large Intestine

Gall Bladder  Storage tank for bile (a greenish- yellow liquid) that helps your body break down and use fats  Located under your liver  Shaped like a pear

Gall Bladder

Liver  Factory for antibodies and bile  Stores vitamins and sugars until your body needs them

Liver

Pancreas  Helps you digest food by breaking down sugars

Your homework…  The Journal of a Hamburger  Write the process of mechanical digestion as it goes through the mouth, esophagus, stomach, small intestine, large intestine, and rectum.  Use information from the Magic School Bus to complete for tomorrow. (First column only!)

The Magic School Bus!  Complete the diagram as your watching!  http://www.gamequarium.org/dir/Sq oolTube_Videos/Science/Human_Bod y/Digestive_System/magic_school_bu s_for_lunch_9673.html http://www.gamequarium.org/dir/Sq oolTube_Videos/Science/Human_Bod y/Digestive_System/magic_school_bu s_for_lunch_9673.html

Healthy Habits  Eat foods that are high in fiber like fruits and vegetables

 Drink plenty of water

 Chew your food completely before you swallow

Avoid foods high in fat

Interesting Facts  Food is in your digestive system for about 24 hours

 Your stomach stretches when you eat like a balloon being filled with air

 You have a trap door called the epiglottis to cover your windpipe when you swallow.

 Your stomach mashes your food the way a baker kneads dough for bread.
