A way of describing something using the words like or as Ex- I was as hungry as a horse. He runs like a cheetah. He runs like a cheetah.

A figure of speech that makes a comparison between two things. *Does NOT use the word like or as. Ex- The red sun was a wafer pasted in the sky. Your smile is a ray of sunshine. Your smile is a ray of sunshine.

To give something not human (animals, ideas, inanimate objects), human characteristics. Ex- The waves beside them danced. The screaming headlines announced the murder.

The repetition of the first consonant. Ex- M ark m y m elodious m idnight m oans! He c lasps the c rag with c rooked hands.

The combination of words which imitate sounds. Ex- Clang battleaxe, and clash sword! Rustling of the paper

A figure of speech which is an over exaggeration. May be used to heighten effect, or to produce comic relief. Ex- All we ever do in this class is write 100 page essays. I am bored to death.

The combination of two contradictory terms to express a condensed paradox. Ex- Parting is such sweet sorrow. Sometimes you have to be cruel to be kind. Loving hate

A play on words. Ex- Ex- Did you hear about the guy whose whole left side was cut off? He's all right now. I wondered why the baseball was getting bigger. Then it hit me.

the use of words to convey a meaning that is the opposite of its literal meaning Ex- A firefighters house burning. A lifeguard drowning.
