1 Electrical Stimulation
Sports Medicine Electrical Stimulation 4/28/2017

2 Objectives Explain the differences between electrical stimulation (E-stim) and transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) List the indications and contraindications for electrical stimulation Identify situations when using electrical stimulation would be beneficial 4/28/2017 Property of CTE Joint Venture

3 Bellwork Remember how it feels to hit your ‘funny bone?’ What happens to the rest of your arm and your hand? Why does it happen? 4/28/2017 Property of CTE Joint Venture

4 Terminology electrical stimulation (E-Stim) – using electricity to target a motor nerve and cause a muscle response transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) – using electricity to target a sensory nerve to decrease pain 4/28/2017 Property of CTE Joint Venture

5 Electrical Modalities
E-Stim Unit TENS unit 4/28/2017 Property of CTE Joint Venture

6 PROPERTY OF PIMA COUNTY JTED, 2010
Think-Pair-Share What are the similarities between E-Stim and TENS? What are the differences between the 2? 3. Think-pair-share teacher presents a question teacher gives wait time for student to form answer teacher instructs students to share their answer with a partner teacher calls on non-volunteers to share with the class PROPERTY OF PIMA COUNTY JTED, 2010

7 E-Stim and TENS Comparison
Similarities 1. Both are electrical modalities 2. Both transmit electricity through electrodes 3. Both stimulate nerves 4. Both produce therapeutic effects Differences 1. E-Stim is used to stimulate motor nerves; TENS stimulates sensory nerves 2. E-stim produces muscle contractions; TENS controls pain 3. An E-stim unit can function as a TENS 4/28/2017 Property of CTE Joint Venture

8 How Electrical Stimulation Units Work
The unit generates an electrical current The current is transmitted by the electrodes (two or more electrodes are required to complete an electrical circuit) The electrodes are placed on the skin The current carried by the electrodes is used to stimulate a nerve (sensory or motor) The amount of electricity is controlled to produce a therapeutic effect 4/28/2017 Property of CTE Joint Venture

9 PROPERTY OF PIMA COUNTY JTED, 2010
Jumbled Sort Put the strips in 2 columns: Indications in Column 1 Contraindications in Column 2 13. Jumbled sort teacher supplies each student or group of students with random strips of instructions, key words, safety procedures, etc, and asks them to put the strips in order teacher calls on non-volunteers to contribute their sorted material 9 PROPERTY OF PIMA COUNTY JTED, 2010

10 Indications of Electrical Stimulation
Increase range of motion Increase muscle strength Muscle re-education Improve muscle tone Improve muscle function Control pain Accelerate wound healing Decrease muscle spasm Prevent atrophy 4/28/2017 Property of CTE Joint Venture

11 Contraindications of E-Stim
Over the carotid sinus During pregnancy Individuals with pacemakers Sensitivity to electricity When active ROM is contraindicated 4/28/2017 Property of CTE Joint Venture

12 PROPERTY OF PIMA COUNTY JTED, 2010
Write on your Slates Using the indications for electrical stimulation, write at least 5 specific situations where using electrical stimulation would be beneficial 2. Whiteboards/Slates student writes answer or solution to a question posed by the teacher teacher solicits all students to show at the same time teacher gives feedback to the students PROPERTY OF PIMA COUNTY JTED, 2010

13 Treatment Parameters 1. Waveform 2. Modulation 3. Intensity 4. Duration 5. Frequency 6. Polarity 7. Electrode setup 4/28/2017 Property of CTE Joint Venture

14 Closure Fill out the third column of the graphic organizer
Answer the question, “How will I use this in the real world?” Turn in your graphic organizers for assessment 4/28/2017 Property of CTE Joint Venture
