Simple Machines https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l1F hs8pXGxM https://www.schooltube.com/video/b92 aaeff6cf4431aa6c7/Bill%20Nye%20- %20Simple%20Machines

What is a Simple Machine? A simple machine has few or no moving parts. Simple machines make work easier

Wheels and Axles The wheel and axle are a simple machine The axle is a rod that goes through the wheel which allows the wheel to turn Gears are a form of wheels and axles

Pulleys Pulley are wheels and axles with a groove around the outside A pulley needs a rope, chain or belt around the groove to make it do work

Inclined Planes An inclined plane is a flat surface that is higher on one end Inclined planes make the work of moving things easier

Wedges Two inclined planes joined back to back. Wedges are used to split things.

Screws A screw is an inclined plane wrapped around a shaft or cylinder. The inclined plane allows the screw to move itself when rotated.

Levers-First Class In a first class lever the fulcrum is in the middle and the load and effort is on either side Think of a see-saw Mechanical advantage of force

Levers-Second Class In a second class lever the fulcrum is at the end, with the load in the middle Think of a wheelbarrow Mechanical advantage of effort

Levers-Third Class In a third class lever the fulcrum is again at the end, but the effort is in the middle Think of a pair of tweezers Mechanical advantage of speed or distance.

Worm Gear Used when large reductions in force are needed, because they produce high torque.

Compound Gears Compound gear trains have two or more pairs of gears in mesh, so that they rotate together. Use for maximum mechanical advantage!

Gears/ Gear sets Mechanical advantage The number of teeth on a set of gears determines the mechanical advantage. Gear sets can increase the torque of a motor, however this does not provide addition power or speed to what the motor puts out.

Figuring driven by drive A machine output shaft spins at 800 rpm and is driven by a motor that spins at 1200 rpm with a 10” pulley attached. What size pulley must be on the machine? Motor (drive) (Driven) Machine 1200rpm 800rpm 10” pulley (or gear)____ pulley (or gear) 1200 x 10 = 1200012000/800= 15 Therefore the machine pulley must be 15”.

Bearings – reduce friction (heat) between metal parts Universal Joints – allow flexibility of the shaft while supplying positive power transfer.

Simple Machines Simple Machines can be put together in different ways to make complex machinery for MECHANICAL ADVANTAGE Mechanical Advantage increases force, speed or distance.
