2013

 You need to make a choice between 10 A and 10 AA. Your teacher will help you make the determination as to which is the best fit.  The curriculum is similar in both; however, the amount of spoonfeeding decreases and the pacing and rigor increases in Honors.

 You need to choose between 11A, Honors Brit (11 AA), IB English and AP Language.  11A is a continuation of 10 A  Honors Brit (11AA) is a literature based course. Analysis of British history and its influence on all of literature is emphasized.  IB English is intended to be a two year commitment. It is required for all Diploma candidate students. There is a test at the end of the second year for possible college credit. The difference between this and AP is the structure of the test. There is no multiple choice section. The test is scored off-site.  AP Language is one year course that can be taken either 11 th or 12 th grade year. There is an off-site test at the end for possible college credit (multiple choice and 3 essays). There is a strong focus on honing your writing and reading skills. The bulk of the course is focused on non-fiction with a sprinkling of novels.

 You are choosing between 12A, continuing with IB English, AP Language or AP Literature  12A is a continuation of 11A  IB English is a continuation of last year as well  AP Language see previous description. Cannot be repeated for credit. It is encouraged this be taken prior to AP Lit.  AP Literature focuses heavily on analyzing fiction and poetry. It is assumed you have mastered your writing skills as you enter this course. A test is given at the end for possible college credit.

 Creative Writing (11 and 12 only): A one semester course that focuses on freedom of expression. Short stories, poetry, fairy tales, journals and much more. Writing heavy/reading light.  Mythology (10-12): If you don’t take AP or 12 A…this one semester class is highly encouraged. It covers all the mythological allusions you see in our culture. Heavy reading/writing light.  Communications 1/2 and Forensics English (9-12): One semester each. You really hone your public speaking skills.  Newspaper (9-12): One year course. Teacher recommendation needed. Responsible students with strong writing and/or interviewing skills. Looks great on college apps. Course can be taken twice for credit.  Yearbook (11 and 12 only): One year course…similar to Newspaper except you are creating the lasting memory of your high school experience. Not an English credit…elective. But still looks great on college apps.
