Acid–Base Reaction (Double Replacement) By Noah Carsten & Jennie Warrell

Description O An acid-base reaction is a reaction that involves an acid and a base which produces a salt and water because of the neutralization of the acid and base properties.

Description O The acid releases H + while the base releases hydroxide OH - to produce water and a salt. HCl + NaOH  H 2 O + NaCl Acid + base  water + salt

Example #1 Stomach Antacids O An antacid works by adding a base to the stomach which decreases the acidity of the hydrochloric acid within. O Tums Example: Tums: CaCO3 Equation: CaCO 3 (s) + HCl(aq)  CaCl 2 (aq) + CO 2 (g) + H 2 O(l)

Example #2 Baking Soda & Vinegar O A basic chemistry experiment is adding baking soda and vinegar together inside of a paper mache volcano to replicate an eruption. O This reaction is caused by the acid (vinegar) and the base (baking soda) causing a neutralization action. The bubbling that forms is caused by the production of carbon dioxide. HC 2 H 3 O 2 (aq) + NaHCO 3 (aq)  NaC 2 H 3 O 2 (aq) + H 2 O(l) + CO 2 (g) vinegar + baking soda  Sodium acetate + water + carbon dioxide

Balanced Equations Stomach Antacids (Tums) CaCO 3 (s) + 2HCl(aq)  CaCl 2 (aq) + CO 2 (g) + H 2 O(l) Baking Soda & Vinegar HC 2 H 3 O 2 + NaHCO 3  NaC 2 H 3 O 2 + H 2 CO 3

Significance O The importance of acid-base reactions is to keep a neutral level within the pH scale. O If something is too acidic, it can become basic, and vice versa. O Additionally, it can lead to beneficial reactions and products.
