Earthquakes By Katelyn Hales 5 th period
2
Issue: What to do to make safer buildings for earthquakes and how to inform people of earthquakes around them.
3
Government Entity To the U.N (united nations) discussing the issue of earthquakes and how to make better ways to inform people. Members of the U.N: : China, France, Russian Federation, the United Kingdom, and the United States.
4
Relation to Earth Science: The earthquakes effects the tectonic plates and make they move more. They also effect the oceans and the ecosystem.
5
Research: In Pakistani, in the city of Lahore, 200 people were inside of a multi-story factory. The factory collapsed during a 7.5 earthquake, killing almost everyone inside. Pakistan had poor safety regulations for the construction on the factory. They did not have the correct type of support to keep the factory from collapsing. This has not only happened in Pakistani, but also all over the world in different counties.
6
Research: The Earth Simulator, is a Japanese supercomputer, that can process 35.6 trillion mathematical operations per second; it is used to analyze earthquake patterns. Forecasters and scientists can use seismic activity and study it to find when an earthquake will occur. Many companies in Tokyo, Japan have regular earthquake and tsunami drill to be prepared for “the big one.”
7
Research: In some areas, they have started beginning to build and repair many of the buildings that were destroyed during a 9.0 earthquake in Japan. “It’s never going to be completely safe, but this will by time to get to higher ground.” Haga, chairman of the residents’ committee. Many officials say to get to the top of the building during an earthquake and they are starting to build buildings with stronger roofing to make this efficient. reinforcement

Research: By 2020 scientists expect that large hospitals will be able to stand after a large earthquake. Many builders are trying to make this come true by making stronger and safer buildings. In California the government will make regulations on the hospitals. If any of the hospitals do not have the right safety regulations for the earthquakes the hospital will lose their licenses. They estimate by 2030 that every hospital will have earthquake safety and hopefully every home will be able to stay under a large earthquake.
9
Research: In Canada they have put seismometers on houses to measure the intensity of the ground shaking during an earthquake. Canada says that there is a 50% chance that there will be a strong earthquake in the next 50 years. In Canada many people are making better, safer homes and buildings and hopefully they will be able to have all the safety regulations by the next large earthquake.
10
Call To Action! We need to get people prepared for the earthquakes by doing more earthquake drills at work, school and at home. We need to have safer buildings and homes that can withstand the shaking of earthquakes. We need more technology to inform people to be prepared and to tell people of an earthquake as soon as possible.
