South Africa White settlement began in 1652 Great increase with discovery of diamonds in 1867 (date of Confederation in Canada) Discovery of gold in 1885, so Almost 90% of land, most resources, all political rights and military power were in the hands of the Europeans who had settled there for over 300 years

3. However… Vast majority of population was descended from Bantu-speaking peoples who had farmed and kept cattle there for thousands of years (so they were the majority) 1910- Union of South Africa 1912- representatives of various Black groups met and formed what later was called the African National Congress. Its goal was to promote equality for all African peoples, regardless of colour

4. During World War 2, Africans fought along side their colonial governments. But while European countries were starting to grant independence to some of their colonies all over the world, in Africa, if there were a lot of White settlers in a country, that was not happening. In fact, after WW2, White South Africans decided to institute apartheid This system separated the country into racial groups under White control.

5. APARTHEID Each ethnic group was to have its own homeland Their citizenship was stripped away from them Many new laws defined even the smallest details of their lives They couldn’t own land or rent apartments in the White sections
