Laptops, Tablets, Cell Phones (Iphone and Androids) & Watches! Students are using more and more technology to aid in their learning. How can we help identify apps and protect the integrity of the educational environment? 2
3
With the growing environment of mobile technology and the on-going growth of applications in these environments, how can we expect to know what works great. Many DS professionals have limited time for exploration of application research. What are some good applications for the Iphone? What about the Android? The answer might not be the same. 3
4
Are there different options for the laptop versus tablet systems? What will the new watches really allow a student to do in the classroom or testing environment? These are common questions we work on each year as we try to support out students and faculty in the educational environment. 4
5
5
6
Consider applications that can be used to address math, note taking and writing, reading, recording, text to speech and time management/organization on the Iphone and Android based cell phone platforms. 6
7
Identify and discuss software options for laptop and tablet based computers including magnification, online calculators, screen reader, and text-to-speech (focus on free programs). 7
8
Identify and discuss other types of technology students are using in the educational environment including Activity bands that display text messages, watches that connect to the internet, etc. 8
9
9
10
Faculty members can also benefit from technology. Some instructors continue to use their tried and true methods. Others are seeking ways to manage their own professional responsibilities for on-going learning and/or research. Some instructors even desire to bring technology into the classroom. 10

Some individual's needs are met with use of a larger monitor, lowering screen resolution, or altering font choice and size. However, in other cases more magnification is necessary. Magnification software will magnify the text and graphics that appear in programs and applications. Many magnification programs are designed to work like a magnifying glass moving over a page. Programs can automatically follow the cursor, magnifying the area around it. Several programs are identified below. Another Lens Magnifixer (*) Super Magnify Zoom MouseZoom 25

Text to Speech software allows the computer to read most documents aloud. Many programs work in several applications, e.g. word processing, web browsing, etc; however, some are specific to one piece of software. Open source text-to-speech programs have a range of voices from which to choose. Students may need to try difference programs to find a voice that works for them.
