Born May 22, 1859 in Edinburgh, Scotland Prosperous family, despite his father being an alcoholic Educated at a Jesuit boarding school in England, paid for by his relatives Doyle returned home and had his father committed to a mental institution Biography

Doyle attended the University of Edinburgh in order to study medicine. He met many other famous writers there, including James Barrie and Robert Louis Stevenson. Biography

The man who most impressed him, however, was Dr. Joseph Bell. The doctor was a master at observation, logic, deduction, and diagnosis. All these qualities were later found in the famous detective, Sherlock Holmes. Biography

Doyle wrote other material, including a historical novel, but nothing had the popularity of Sherlock Holmes. During World War I, Doyle worked as a war correspondent. Biography

Sherlock Holmes Facts Doyle became convinced that Sherlock Holmes was a distraction to more serious writing, so he killed off the Holmes character in 1893 in the story The Final Problem. When he needed money, Doyle bowed to public outcry and revived Sherlock Holmes in the novel The Hound of the Baskervilles In 1901.
