Strategies for writing definition essays: Understand the term well enough to write an effective opening paragraph and thesis statement. Supply effective support in the body paragraphs, each with its own topic sentence and supporting details. Present a new insight in the closing paragraph based upon the details in the body. This is often the final sentence of the opening paragraph. Find the topic sentence in each body paragraph. This is often (but not always) the first sentence of the paragraph. Sentences 3. Have I varied the beginnings and lengths of sentences? 4. Have I combined short choppy sentences? 5. Have I avoided shifts in sentences? 6. Have I avoided fragments and run-ons? Conventions 7. Do I use correct verb forms (he saw, not he seen)? 8. Do my subjects and verbs agree (she speaks, not she speak)? 9. Have I used the right words (their, there, they’re)? 10.
