Role of Information Systems in Empowering Innovation Networks Sven-Volker Rehm, Lakshmi Goel & Iris Junglas - September 2015 Page 1/23 Open innovation networks, which involve a diverse set of partners, are vital for developing new products and services, especially for small and medium-sized enterprises. Information systems play a significant role in empowering such networks throughout the entire open innovation process.

Role of Information Systems in Empowering Innovation Networks Sven-Volker Rehm, Lakshmi Goel & Iris Junglas - September 2015 Page 3/23 Growing Importance of Innovation Networks 1/2 New product development, is a nontrivial undertaking, and, mostly, only large corporations have the resources, methodologies and skills to do it on their own. But, increasingly, even large corporations depend on joint business developments, licensing, joint ventures and spin-offs for new product development. Today, a large number of marketable innovations are not developed by one firm alone, but by a cluster of partners that agree to temporarily join forces as part of an innovation network.

These benefits require partners to work cooperatively. To enable cooperative work, firms need to use information systems (IS) in ways that support agility and flexibility, while integrating process and compliance structures.

Knowledge maps are graphical representations of important knowledge domains. They require collecting relevant information and data, which is then captured in databases and other types of repositories. Knowledge spaces They are implemented as repositories for technical as well as project management content. Function: to structure content so it is available for various activities. Innovation procedure toolkits intended to reduce the uncertainty help to integrate the knowledge of diverse partners and to reorient innovation processes after Social media platforms represent a vital tool for innovation networks.
