Welcome and Introductions Katherine Bergman- Career Ladders Project Robert Curtis- ConnectEd

Outcomes Map current pathway programs Identify courses that could be articulated, dual enrolled, or developed to increase industry certifications, support access to advanced coursework and improve student success in the pathway. Identify opportunities at both community college and high school levels to strengthen pathway programs of study, prioritize them, and begin action planning for work the Community of Practice can engage.

Introductions Name, Organization, Position/Role Your first job after high school? What are you hoping to get out of today?

5 Agenda

Where are We Losing Students? Each year dropouts represent $320 billion in lost lifetime earning potential 6 SOURCE: Alliance for Excellent Education, “The High Cost of High School Dropouts: What the Nation Pays for Inadequate High Schools,” (Washington, DC: 2008).

Need to improve transitions… Two-thirds nationally enroll in one or more level of Dev. Ed. (remediation), larger percentage are assigned and don’t enroll Only 40% of community college students nationally complete a credential or transfer within 6 years

What is Pathway mapping Northern California Career Pathways Alliance Powerful process to identify, align, and strengthen K14 pathways across systems A way to communicate the benefits of pathway education to all stakeholders Roadmap to high quality pathways Identify gaps

What Pathway Mapping is not Course content Alone, it won’t make any changes to program. Northern California Career Pathways Alliance

Benefits of Pathway Mapping Identify gaps in the current pathway Design includes program of study, transitions, post sec. completion, WBL & industry engagement. Creates a clearer/bigger picture of the pathway Communicate importance of pathway education to ALL stakeholders Inform or leverage other funding sources/initiative (i.e. Perkins Funding, CCSS, NGSS) Northern California Career Pathways Alliance

21 Greater Structure and Improved Course Sequence (K12)

What’s In Place? 1.Use post it notes and update or edit what is on the draft pathway maps for your institution. Review prompting questions. 2.Put a star next to items that are in development or aspirational 3.Be prepared to share out briefly your map of what you currently have in place and are developing.

Samples

Sharing of Maps Post maps and share out what you have put up, 3 minutes per pathway Look for Strengths, Gaps, and Patterns Discuss Opportunities at the Community College and High School Levels What are areas that you need support from the other institution? What questions do you have?

Priorities? What are 2-3 priority areas for development based on the conversations you just had?

Next Steps/ Action Plans What are some key next steps or action plans for moving the work forward in the priority areas identified?
