Industry Advisory Board HoS Presentation October, 2015

HoS’s Presentation Staff Changes REF New Staffing Plans Finance League Tables Student Recruitment Issues for the Future

Staff Changes Starters: Dr James Thorne, Lecturer in Epigenetics Dr Jo Maycock, Lecturer in Food Biochemistry Jane Thorn, Undergraduate Support Officer Sarah Viney, Research Technician Dr Bernadette Moore, Associate Professor in Obesity (starts 1 st Jan, 2016)

Staff Returners and Leavers Dr Lisa Marshall has returned from maternity leave Dr Andrea Day has left to pursue other interests

Dr Bernadette Moore Research Interests Non-alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is the hepatic consequence of obesity. Prevalence of NAFLD in the general population is estimated at 30% and its dramatic rise in incidence is correlated to the worldwide increase in obesity. I am interested in the dietary, genetic and immune factors that influence NAFLD progression. Utilizing discovery based proteomics, genomics and systems biology approaches alongside molecular cell biology techniques, my research aims both to identify disease biomarkers and characterize molecular mechanisms of NAFLD progression. Non-alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease and Cardiovascular Disease Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and cardiovascular disease (CVD) share common genetic and environmental risk factors such as insulin resistance, obesity and diabetes. Recent data show NAFLD is associated with increased CVD risk and NAFLD may serve as a mediator rather than a marker of atherosclerosis.

A Cross-Council Vision for Food, Nutrition and Health Research Research: ‘Many of the mechanisms underpinning the effects of food and nutrition on long-term health are under-investigated’ ‘the absence of a robust underpinning evidence base leaves key questions unanswered’ Industry and Impact: ‘Innovation in the food industry depends on underpinning research’ ‘significant gaps in our understanding of the mechanisms which link food components to health benefits make it difficult to substantiate health claims…’

At IPE in the summer I put forward a plan for new academic investments, based on our strong financial position and the strategic needs presented by the Research Council documents The plan asked for investment over the next 3 years. The VC said that if it was a good plan over 3 years then we should do it in 1 year!

New Posts Agreed at IPE 2015 2 x Lecturers in Obesity 1 x Chair in Biopolymers and Food Colloids; 2 x Lecturers (about to be advertised) 1 x Chair in Energy Metabolism; 2 x Lecturers 1 x Chair in Complex Carbohydratres and Health; 2 x Lecturers 1 x Lecturer in Plant Cell Walls and Health 1 x Lecturer in Food Biochemistry, vice Day (interviews Nov 5 th ) 2 x Research Technician Posts 1 x Admin Support (Research) post

Together with 3 x UAF posts (interviews in December), we could be appointing 16 new Academic posts in the next year
