Chapter 1 Section 3: Studying Life

Characteristics of Living Things Made up of cells Reproduction Based on universal genetic code. Growth and Development Obtain and use materials and energy. Respond to environment. Maintain a stable internal environment. Groups: change over time.

Living Things are Made of Cells Cell: collection of living matter enclosed by a barrier that separates a cell from its surroundings.

Living Things Reproduce Two types of reproduction Sexual: cells from two different parents unite to produce a the first cell of a new organism. Asexual: the new organism has a single parent.

Living Things are Based on a Genetic Code Directions for inheritance are stored in DNA. DNA, with a few minor variations, determines the inherited traits of every organism on Earth.

Living Things Grow and Develop All living things grow during at least part of their lives. Growth: increase in size. Development: periods of change (shape, structure, etc.)

Living Things Need Energy Organisms need a constant supply of materials and energy to survive. Metabolism: combination of chemical reactions which builds up or breaks down materials.

Living Things Respond to the Environment Organisms detect and respond to stimuli from their environment.

Living Things Maintain an Internal Balance Organisms must keep internal conditions (temperature, water, etc.) constant to survive. Homeostasis: process by which organisms keep an internal balance.

Evolution As a group, organisms change over time. The ability of a group of organisms to change over time is invaluable for survival in a world that is always changing.

Branches of Biology Some of the levels at which life can be studied include: Molecules Cells Organisms Populations of a single kind of organism Communities of different organisms in an area Biosphere

Biology in Everyday Life It is important to be scientifically literate in order to make decisions about health, political views, environmental issues, etc.

Section 1-3 Questions 1. Describe 3 characteristics of living things. 2. What topics might biologists study at the community level of organization? 3. Compare sexual and asexual reproduction. 4. Explain one issue in society today that requires us to be scientifically literate in order understand it.
