5  After Texas: Court Case in the U.S.- Dred Scott v. Sanford 1857  Sued for the freedom of his family (his wife, daughters, and himself).  Traveled with his master often to Free soil states so decided to argue that he was free according to the laws of Illinois. (where they moved)  However he was unsuccessful as the court decided 7-2 that slaves could not be citizens.  This confirmed that slaves were property and the right given by the U.S. constitution did not apply.

6   he Fredonian Rebellion occurred when Haden Edwards, an empresario who received a contract from the Mexican government to settle land, claimed a part of East Texas as an independent entity. o Most Texans opposed the rebellion, including Steven F Austin o The event was minor but attracted a lot of attention in US newspapers that expressed worry over the Mexican government; the US tried to buy Texas many times, which offended Mexico Back in Texas: The Fredonian Rebellion

7   The Mier y Teran Report surveyed conditions in Texas and made recommendations to the Mexican government that would reduce US influence in the region, including:  Discourage trade with US  Send soldiers to Texas to increase Mexican control  Encourage Europeans and Mexicans to settle in Texas to counter US population Mexican Government asks for a report

8   Banned U.S. immigration to Texas  Made it illegal to bring more slaves to Texas  Suspended unfulfilled empresario contracts.  Began to Tax all U.S. Imports.  As a result Tejano and US settlers were angered because:  - They felt the regulations would hurt the economy.  They were upset that their friends and relatives from the U.S. could not join them in Texas. Law of April 6,1830

9  Turtle Bayou Resolutions  Drafted by settlers after the Anahuac conflict that declared the conflict a defense of their rights, not a rebellion against Mexico.  Expressed support for General Santa Ana who was trying to overthrow the Mexican President Bustamante.

11  Meeting with Santa Anna  Santa Anna was elected president in 1833.  Stephen F. Austin attempted to separate Texas from Coahuila. (still wanted to be part of Mexico)  Stephen F. Austin wrote a letter to local government in San Antonio and was arrested because of this letter.
