TIPD visit to Australia Impact of visit on Lake Middle School, Isle of Wight

Purpose of visit To identify good practice and teaching strategies to stretch and challenge ‘more able’ pupils in all lessons.

What have we done so far? KS2 Assembly. Twilight INSET with all staff. Staff encouraged to include ‘Thinking skills’ element in lessons. AR has taught a number of discrete ‘Thinking skills’ sessions to all year 6 classes. Library lessons – KH has planned ‘Thinking skills’ elements into units of work. Use of +-? for ‘pupil voice’. AR attended South East Regional Partnership G&T Conference – gained more knowledge and ideas for using ‘Thinking skills’ in lessons. Children have had the opportunity to work with ‘Mad Scientist’ and to be filmed for the internet.

Mad Scientist, Dr Mark Biddiss visits Lake Middle. G& T Pupils were filmed demonstrating a range of science experiments for national website.

Thinking skills: ‘fat’ & ‘skinny’ questions.. Children pose questions for others to research and feedback.

Independent research to answer questions... and feedback to class

What next? AR will deliver INSET on Thinking Skills to all staff. AR to continue to work with small enrichment groups. AR and Deputy Head to investigate opportunities for ‘GLOSS’ programme across the school.
