1 Somerhill Junior School 25 th – 29 th June 2012

2  To take place on Friday 29 th June, in the afternoon, St. Mary Magdalen school (KS2) have been invited to attend.  Year 3 – Mexico  Year 4 – Great Britain  Year 5 – India  Year 6 – Australia  Countries selected due to topic links, and in the case of year 3, the Connecting Classrooms link with Mexico.

3  Each year group will come on stage to their national anthem, and then perform an item (singing, music, dancing) related to their country.  Eg. Mexican Hat Dance

4  Each class will run an activity (1/3 of the class to take 15 minutes each), which will be based on the Olympic and Paralympic values. Those not running the activity can, along with guests, gain a stamp or sticker for each value collected, as they try out the different activities  Afternoon ends with a closing speech from the Head teacher about the values and their legacy in life.

5  Some ideas…..  Courage – blindfolded trail with directions in Spanish  Friendship – handprints joined together  Equality – Go Kids Go  Determination – Break a world record  Children have now come up with many ideas of their own.

6  Olympic assemblies  Sport relief – research your Olympian or Olympic sport  Torch relay

7  Activities to link to the values and give language learning opportunities, feed into the Friday celebration  Each year group to do the Sporting Challenge, recording new sports in their passports (list of sports in Spanish)  Each year group to choose from a bank of activities and to take ownership of one of the values for the Friday ‘values’ hour

8  Art – making flags and banners  Sports challenge – can we get someone in to teach us a new sport eg. archery?  Geography – Find out more about the country your year group is supporting  Spanish – directional language for blindfold activity/ names of sports for passport  Literacy – letter to an Olympian/interview (Year 3, Nino’s Mask, link to values)  Music – National anthems

9  To hold a termly ‘Values’ assembly, when a child from each year group will be awarded a Values certificate. Award winners can be nominated by other children.
