2. Last week… We learned that cars release a lot of… – Carbon dioxide! C 8 H 18 + O 2  CO 2 + H 2 0 Ethanol + oxygen yields carbon dioxide and water In fact, 19.2 pounds of are CO 2 released for every gallon of gasoline burned! CO 2 is the major contributor to global warming!

3. Last week… We learned that most of the resources that we have are NOT used for transportation…. – Coal = NOPE – Hydro = Nope – Wind = Nope – Nuclear = Nope – Solar = Nope

4. A few are used a little bit… – Natural gas – Ethanol – Vegetable oil

5. but that we really use, is – OIL Diesel and Gasoline – And LOTS of it!

7. What if we could use the other stuff? – Coal = Nope YEP! – Hydro = Nope YEP! – Wind = Nope YEP! – Nuclear = Nope YEP! – Solar = Nope YEP! We could if we had better….

8. Battery Technology! The Electric Car & The Plug-In Hybrid – Remember the energy content discussion? If a battery could hold more electricity, the car could travel greater distances…. Which means it becomes more useful for people!

9. Batteries could be charged using different types of resources – Solar – Wind – Hydro – Nuclear – Coal (poor choice, but it is what we use the most to generate electricity)
