7 Why do we need to know how to calculate the Mean, Median, Mode and Range? We need to know how to calculate Mean, Median & Mode to help us find different types of average within a data set. Calculating the Range gives us another sort of information about the dataset we are using, it looks at the difference between certain figures. These methods allow us to extract different sorts of data that can be used to make statements about the information we wish to investigate.

8 What are Mean, Median & Mode used for? We can use the Mean to work out the average number in a set of data, this helps us to draw ‘typical’ conclusions i.e. “on average there are 4 employees off sick a month each year” We can use the Median to find the middle number in a set of data. If we compare the Median figure to the Mean figure we can see if we have any anomalies that may skew our data (i.e. if someone had EXTRA LARGE feet, this would skew the Median value but have a smaller impact on the Mean value) The Mode can be used to find the most frequent value i.e. if a nursery had 20 children attending and 15 out of the 20 were aged 9 years old, 9 would be the mode.

9 What is Range used for? Range is used for determining the difference between the largest and smallest numbers in a data set. It allows us to know how much of a difference there is between one number and another.
