The Polícia Internacional e de Defesa do Estado or PIDE, was the main tool of repression used by the authoritarian regime of António de Oliveira Salazar in Portugal during the Estado Novo Cartoon by Dias Coelho, assassinated by a PIDE- brigade, in the open street in Lisbon, on 19th December, 1961 [collection of Mário Soares Foundation]

Delgado was allowed to run for the presidency, in 1958. He was able to mobilise all opposition forces behind his bid.

Initially Delgado was supporter of the right-wing dictatorship of Salazar, he was an ornament of the regime.

Portuguese Legion was a Portuguese paramilitary state organization during the Estado Novo. It was founded in 1936 and dissolved in 1974.

Portuguese Youth was a Portuguese youth organization under the Estado Novo. Membership was compulsory between the ages of 7 and 14, and voluntary until the age of 25. It was founded in 1936 and dissolved in 1974.

Delgado made the mistake of campaigning seriously for the presidency in one of Salazar's mock elections.

In 1961, a band of Delgado’s supporters seized the Portuguese cruise ship Santa Maria and steamed off into the South Atlantic while Lisbon fumed.

On the 1st January, 1962, a coup against the regime was launched, with an assault on the barracks of Beja.

On 13 February 1965, he was killed by the regime's secret police, PIDE. The Badajoz meeting was a trap.
